Another in the Nova series of apple the Nova spy was developed at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Kentville, Nova Scotia in 1986. Novaspy is a cross between Nova Easygro, Red Spy and Golden Delicious. It was bred to be a scab-resistant version of Northern Spy apples – our absolute all-time favourite pie apple. Nova Spy apples maintain the Northern Spy’s sweet- yet-slightly- sour taste.
It is moderately resistant to powdery mildew, brown bug and mullein bug but found to be moderately susceptible to rosy apple aphid and to juniper apple rust.
This very productive tree’s medium to large sized fruit is crispy and juicy. It is able to withstand very cold temperatures and has the ability to be stored for up to eight months in cold storage. It is currently planted extensively in the Annapolis Valley, but as of this writing, it is not yet available commercially.
